His success this year has seemed phenomenal, soundtracked by screaming girls: You Need Me rocketed straight into the top three, while its predecessor, The A-Team, a lachrymose portrait of a young drug-addicted prostitute, spent three months in the top 10. Then again, you can understand his bullishness. It all seems a little at odds with Sheeran's likably unassuming image: on his website, he offers retail space to liquorice allsort-themed jewellery designed by his mum. He pours scorn on other artists given a leg-up into the charts by songwriters-for-hire or the munificence of the BPI: "Don't need another wordsmith to make my tunes sell … my shit's cool … I didn't go to Brit School." As an album on its own, however, + does have gorgeous guitars all over it and Eds beautifuk voice.F rom the title down, his current hit You Need Me, I Don't Need You presents 20-year-old singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran as a very cocksure customer indeed. Reports suggest Ed will not release another full album in 2012, but he is working on another EP which he said will be collaborative, which is definitely going to be something to look out for. the highlights of the album are Small Bump which is so beautiful and emotional, and the City, which had an electric guitar added for the + version of it. It echoed James Blunt or James Morrison too much, it should have had something more edgy.
Unfortunately for Ed, trying to please his original fans with what turned out to be + I don't believe turned out as well as it could have.
however it turned out to be simply incredible, it made grime, and rap music in general accessible for everyone. To hear of a white kid with a guitar try and make music with grime greats like Wiley, Sway and Wretch 32, you'd laugh and envision a car crash coming. 5 Collaborations Project, was for me - ignoring the fact it was only an EP - probably my album of 2011.
